Fall home maintenance checklist

Start indoors

Check the everyday systems before the season changes.

Arrange a heating-system check-up.Book a qualified contractor before you need the heat regularly. ENERGY STAR recommends pre-season professional maintenance.
Inspect the HVAC filter.Confirm the correct size and type; follow manufacturer guidance for cleaning or replacement. Continue monthly inspections.
Test smoke alarms.Follow the manufacturer's procedure. Keep monthly tests on your calendar and check the alarms' manufacture dates.
Check carbon monoxide alarm instructions.Record the required testing schedule and replacement date for each device. Ask your local fire department if coverage is unclear.
Notice drafts and damaged seals.Make a list of accessible window and door seals that need attention. Use materials and methods suitable for the home; do not block required ventilation.

Inspect from a safe position and book help for work at height.

Review gutters and downspouts. From the ground, look for obvious blockages, overflow marks, or disconnected sections. Arrange safe cleaning or repairs where needed.
Look at where rainwater goes.Note pooling or drainage toward the building and discuss persistent problems with a professional.
Plan hose and outdoor-faucet care.Where freezing is possible, follow the fixture manufacturer's and local utility's winterization guidance.
Schedule irrigation winterization if needed.Use the system instructions or a qualified irrigation contractor. Do not improvise compressed-air procedures.
Check visible exterior damage.Record loose or damaged materials seen from the ground. Get qualified help for roof, electrical, structural, or hard-to-reach work.

Keep a record so next season starts with less guesswork.

Check appliance manuals for seasonal care.Add applicable tasks for the systems you own; avoid a universal service interval for every appliance.
Review the next three months of warranties.Find the written coverage terms and service contact before setting a reminder.
Update storm or outage supplies for your area.Use your local emergency-management guidance for the hazards and household needs that apply.
Write down completed work and outstanding jobs.Include the date, service provider, and next step. Keep postponed work separate from completed work.
Back up your home records.Save a current copy somewhere you can find later and check that the exported file opens.
